It’s More Than You Can Handle

Sisyphean toil

Life is a funny thing.  It can throw you a curveball when you least expect it.  That happened to me 14-years-ago.  My husband and I were finally building the home we dreamed about, and I had just had my second child.   I was happy, very happy, but suddenly – the curveball came – my health began to fall apart.

I had developed my first-ever bladder infection and even though the infection was treated, over and over I might add, the pain never went away and actually became more and more intense with time.  My husband took me to specialists from New York to Maryland to California.  I was eventually diagnosed with an incurable disease, but no one could stop the pain.  During this time, I struggled to get through my days.

I am happy to say that with God directing us, I was eventually able to get better.  It was a very difficult time in my life and I don’t like to talk about it much.  It’s hard for me to look back at my photo albums and remember how sick I was for 10 years. When I look at photos instead of remembering the good times, I remember the pain I felt and it’s hard for me.  I don’t even like to share much about that time of my life with others.

The reason I am sharing this bit of personal information is because I want others to know that it was way more than I could handle, and only with God was it possible to endure.

At times, people would try to comfort me by saying, “God won’t give you more than you can handle”.  I have to share with you that this is simply not true and when people would say it, it certainly didn’t make me feel any better.  The verse that this is taken from is 1 Corinthians 10:13, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience.  And God is faithful.  He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.  When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure”.  This verse was written by Paul to the church in Corinth. He was telling them that everyone will struggle with sin and the devil enticing them to do evil, but God will always provide a way out, if they look to Him.

When the same verse is used when someone is suffering physically, it is being misused.  On the contrary, we DO face circumstances at times, beyond our choice, that is too much for us to handle on our own.  That’s where Jesus comes in.

What I have found was, when I was at my lowest point, God was with me.  He was with me when my husband would leave for work, despite me hanging onto his pants legs and begging him not to go, because I was too sick to care for the boys.  He was there when I was screaming in agony in my backyard, and didn’t care who heard.  He was there when I was found face down on the cold concrete, and didn’t even know I was there because I was in so much pain.  He was there when I got bad test results, and wasn’t sure how to carry on.  He was there when I was alone, and thought no one really cared.  He was there, holding me up, when it was impossible for me to hold myself.

I’m not the only one who has faced more than I could handle alone.  Paul said in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9, “We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.  In fact, we expected to die.  But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely on God.”

I’m certain that many of you are going through something that is bigger than you right now and you are wondering what is wrong with you that you can’t seem to handle this.  Just know that you are not meant to handle things ON YOUR OWN.  God is ready and waiting to be your stronghold, tower of strength, comforter, healer, companion, Savior, and friend.  He wants to be these things to you and so much more.

Are you facing something you think you can’t handle alone?  Guess what, you’re right!  You can’t do it alone.  You weren’t even designed to.  God says, apart from me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5), but “with God, everything is possible” (Matthew 19:6).  Don’t rely on yourself, instead, rely on God.

Merry Christmas!!!

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve – I think that is my favorite day of the year!

To think that God cared enough about us to leave the beauty and perfectness of Heaven, where angels sang and worshipped Him constantly, and come to earth and experience everything we do is overwhelming to think…

BUT I am so thankful that He did!

Wishing you all a Blessed Christmas & Happy New Year 2014.

Thank you all for sharing some of 2013 with me each time you read my blogs.

I wanted to share with you music by my son’s at our church’s Christmas Service.

This is my son, Brady singing “My Soul Magnifies The Lord”                                      He has music available for purchase in i-tunes if you are interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z4vhOjgdqQ

I am very proud of them for using their gifts God has given them                            but mostly I just love their hearts for Him.                                                                      When God gave me them, He blessed me beyond imagination.
