My family and I attended a church as guests a few weeks ago. At one point in the service, an elderly gentleman went to the stage, cane in hand, to sing a song that was special and dear to him. He began to sing, "Give Me Jesus" and as he did tears began to roll down my face. You see those very words hang on my bathroom wall - so I see it when I am getting ready for the day, and I often sing it in the shower to begin, and even end my day. It's become 'my song that I sing to Jesus'. What made me cry so heavily was watching this older gentleman sing it, I watched his face, and as I did - it was like I was seeing flashes of a life that has experienced so much.... a life that was full of ups and downs, good and bad, victory and defeat, tears and laughter, pain and joy. As I watched him - clutching his cane in one hand to keep his balance, I saw a determination in him - it was a determination that I am certain came with knowing that ALL he ever wanted or needed was found in Jesus.
This world has a lot to try to entice us with - we can be attracted to beauty, money, position, power.... but as we grow older we realize those things are momentary and fading. They do not bring happiness nor bring fulfillment. You can go at them for awhile, but you will quickly tire and feel as if you've never accomplished it all.
As we grow older there is a satisfaction in knowing that Jesus is really all we need and all we want. Growing closer to him - communicating with him - knowing him more each day than we did the previous one ..... that is where true fulfillment and happiness comes from.
We can chase pretty things from now until we fall exhausted.... or we can choose to chase the face and heart of Jesus, the one who gave everything for us (because He really does love us that much).
No matter what you may be facing in life - know that He is the ONE and ONLY thing that you need. When you wake each morning - when you feel alone and abandoned - and especially when you die..... Jesus Is ALL You Need.... He is ALL You Have Ever Needed..... He is ALL You Ever Will Need!
You, LORD, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands. How wonderful are your gifts to me; how good they are!
I praise the LORD, because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me. I am always aware of the LORD's presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me.
And so I am thankful and glad, and I feel completely secure, because you protect me from the power of death. I have served you faithfully, and you will not abandon me to the world of the dead.
You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure for ever. Psalm 16:5-11 (GNB Version)
