Words Can Hurt Or Heal

BIBLE READING:   James 3:2-10 We all make many mistakes. If anyone does not make a mistake with his tongue by saying the wrong things, he is a perfect man. It shows he is able to make his body do what he wants it to do. We make a horse go wherever we want it to go by a small bit in its mouth. We turn its whole body by this.  Sailing ships are driven by strong winds. But a small rudder turns a large ship whatever way the man at the wheel wants the ship to go.

The tongue is also a small part of the body, but it can speak big things. See how a very small fire can set many trees on fire. The tongue is a fire. It is full of wrong. It poisons the whole body. The tongue sets our whole lives on fire with a fire that comes from hell.  Men can make all kinds of animals and birds and fish and snakes do what they want them to do.  But no man can make his tongue say what he wants it to say. It is sinful and does not rest. It is full of poison that kills.  With our tongue we give thanks to our Father in heaven. And with our tongue we speak bad words against men who are made like God.  Giving thanks and speaking bad words come from the same mouth. My Christian brothers, this is not right.

Have you heard the saying, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?"  I think this was something our parents told us growing up when we were hurt by something someone said.  But you know what, it never helped!      It never helped because it just isn't true.   The fact is that words have a very profound power - words can cut us to the very core.

When I was a  teenager, I had a boyfriend who broke up with me - telling me that I would never be as 'pretty as my sister was'.     For many years I would look at myself as 'not pretty'.   I was seeing myself through the eyes of harsh words that someone said - and I wasn't seeing myself through Christ's eyes for me (that's another devotion all together).

This tongue that we have has I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E power.   We can use our tongue to bring blessings on others or bring curses and death.   The tongue can be hard to control, but not impossible.  With the help of the Holy Spirit each day, we can have power over our tongue.

Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech, 1 Peter 3:10

If there is someone you have hurt with your tongue - go to them today and ask for forgiveness.   If you have been hurt by someone - release that person because of the love of Christ inside of you.

Guard your tongue today - speak life into others and not death.  Your tongue has power to hurt or to heal.

Dear Jesus, forgive me for times that I have spoken negativity, defeat, or death into someone.  Fill me with more of you.   Help me to have power over my tongue to only speak life and blessings into other people's lives today.  Help me to spread the love of you wherever I go.   In Jesus Name, Amen!
