READ: Matthew 16:13-18 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"
"Well," they replied, "some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets."
Then he asked them, "But who do you say I am?"
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
Jesus replied, "You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being". Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means 'rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
Have you ever noticed that once you have children and they begin to grow up and know people, that you take on a different name? It's true - I can't begin to tell you how many people know me as "Brady's Mom" or "Austin's Mom". It's a different identity - "MOM". (I can't say that ever bothered me - I love being Mom).
In today's scripture - Jesus had an identity question. He wanted to know who other people thought he was. He was asking his disciples and Peter had the great revelation from God above that Jesus was truly the Messiah - the Son of God himself!
We live in a world with many different religions - and a wide variety of people who come from all backgrounds. Some people say that Jesus was just a man, or a mere prophet. Some say he was a "good person" who went about doing good. Some even deny his existence all together.
The real question though for you today is: Who Do You Say That Jesus Is?
- Is He King of Your life? Lord of Your Heart? Savior of Your Soul? Your Very Best Friend?
- Is He a part of your life at all? Does He matter to you?
If it's been awhile since you have talked with Jesus... do it today. Tell him just what He means to you.
When Peter answered him - he had a great message for Peter. He has something great for you too. He's waiting to hear who he is to you. Let Him reveal to you His great plan and purpose for your life. Draw close to Him and He will draw close to you(James 4:8).
