READ: Luke 14:15-24 Hearing this, a man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!”
Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations. When the banquet was ready, he sent his servant to tell the guests, ‘Come, the banquet is ready.’ But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen, and I want to try them out. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
“The servant returned and told his master what they had said. His master was furious and said, ‘Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full. For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’”
Have you ever been invited to something and you just didn't want to go - so you made an excuse? I sure have. I remember as a teenager, I had some friends who constantly wanted me to stay over night at their home. If you know me, you might know that I am a "home body". Even to this day, I am very content to stay home and not have to really go anywhere. I'm not even one to want to travel the world - I'm just content in my home, caring for it, and for my family. When my friends would call - I would cover the speaker portion of the phone, and beg my mom to make an excuse for me so I didn't have to go. In my friends eyes, my mom took the blame (she was happy to do this for me).
In today's scripture Jesus is sitting at the table with a man and the man exclaims, "What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!" --- Jesus in answer to him proceeds to tell a parable. In Jesus' parable a man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations, but people had silly excuses as to why they could not attend. This made the man 'furious' (because who wants to throw a party and no one comes)! So he sent his servant out to invite others - less fortunate people and he told his servant to invite them so the house would be full.
One day - there is going to be a great banquet in heaven. All people are invited to this banquet - but many have made excuses. The only ones who will be present are those who are children of God. The master desires everyone to attend - but not everyone will.
The only way to be sure you will be at the table with Jesus - is to accept Him as your Savior. He wants you there, but the choice is yours. This is not the time for silly excuses.... this is the time to get right with Jesus while the invitation is still given. Set your heart to be a heart after Him.
