READ: Luke 14:26 If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.
What is holding you back from following Jesus? Is it a relationship that you are in? Is it your friends? Maybe you are concerned with what others will think. Or maybe you are afraid you'd even lose someone that you care about. In some countries if someone converts to following Christ - they are shunned or even killed. Here in America we don't face such dire circumstances, but we can still have fears of what others will think that hold us back.
In Luke 14:26 - Jesus was telling us that in order to be his disciple we have to "hate" everyone else. This seems contrary to other things Jesus has told us. Things like "honor your Father and Mother" and "love your neighbor as yourself". Jesus was not contradicting himself -- He was saying that our love for HIM should IN COMPARISON make our love for our families seem like hate. Our love for Jesus is to FAR OUTWEIGH our love for our closest friends/family.
Do you love Jesus THAT MUCH?
