READ: Matthew 6:5-6 When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get. But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
Have you ever been around someone who likes to be seen and heard? This type of person likes to be noticed and they like to be recognized. They don't like to share the limelight - they like the light on THEM and THEM ALONE.
In Matthew, chapter 6 we see Jesus teaching about prayer and fasting. He was telling people not to be like those who love to do things to be seen and heard. He was warning them that those type of people who desire praise from people are already getting their reward and that is all they will get.
As followers of Jesus our desire is to be on Jesus and pleasing Him. If our desire is to receive recognition or praise from man - then that is simply wrong.
Matthew 6:2 So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
Dear Jesus - forgive me for wanting attention on myself. Help me to be humble before You. Willing to serve You and serve others with a pure heart - and absolutely no desire for recognition. Thank You for Your Word that guides me and instructs me in the way I should go. Help me to always obey Your ways. Amen.
