READ: 1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
The time had come for Samuel to anoint a new King as the future King of Israel. God told Samuel to go to Bethlehem and find a man named Jesse who lived there. One of Jesse's sons the Lord God had selected to be the next King and Samuel was to anoint him.
After arriving and preparing a sacrifice, he then invited Jesse and his sons. When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab (Jesse's oldest) and thought, "Surely this is the Lord's anointed!" But the Lord said to Samuel, "Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him".
Then Jesse looked at Abinadab, but the Lord said, "This is not the one". Next was Shimea, but the Lord said, "Neither is this the one the Lord has chosen." This patten went on for all SEVEN of Jesse's sons who were presented to Samuel. I'm sure at this point Samuel was a bit confused and he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons that you have?" Jesse replied, "there is still the youngest, but he's out in the fields watching the sheep and goats." Samuel had him sent for. When David, Jesse's youngest son, arrived the Lord said, "This is the one; anoint him".
I'm pretty certain that all of Jesse's sons were tall and handsome. They all would have made fine specimens for the King of Isreal. But the LORD who always knows best doesn't judge people by their outward appearance. He doesn't judge them by their reputation, their past, their occupation, how much money they have, their home, the car they drive, or even their talents .... The Lord judges people by THEIR HEART.
To me it is comforting to know that the Lord doesn't see things the way people do or even the way we do. People judge by the outward appearance, but the Lord - He looks at the heart.
