Giving God Control

READ:  Luke 9:23-24 Then he (Jesus) said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.  If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it.  But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

The definition of control is to "be in charge of".   Most of us like to be 'IN CONTROL'.  I know personally, I prefer to drive myself rather than be a passenger in the vehicle because that way I feel more 'in control'.    I think most humans have an innate nature built inside of them to want to control things.  However, when it comes to our relationship with God, it is very important, that we learn to surrender control over our lives to Him.

Jesus himself was teaching that very thing to his disciples in Luke, chapter 9.   This scripture is not just for the disciples, but for us as well.    Jesus was saying to be a follower of His, you must give up YOUR WAY, take up your cross, and follow Him.

The cross was a symbol of total sacrifice.  Jesus gave his life on THE CROSS.  "Taking up your cross" means giving your entire life over to God in much the same way that Jesus gave His life for us.  This means giving our desires, dreams, and our destiny over to Him.   We come to a point where we say, "not what we want Lord, but what you want".      This doesn't have to be done out of FEAR.  Because we serve a God who loves us so much that He wants what is BEST for us.    He wants to give to us - not take away from us.

The scripture actually says to "take up your cross DAILY".   Jesus knew us and knew that each day of our lives the tendency to 'pull back the control from Him' would be there and that this is a DAILY decision that we have to make to LET HIM HAVE THE REIGNS OF OUR LIVES.

Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. Matthew 10:39

We can't hold the reigns of our lives so tightly that we don't live for Jesus and we don't let Him have control.   To do this risks our eternal life.    However, if we hand control over to Jesus - surrendering to Him and trusting Him  - eternal life with Him is promised.

Jesus was totally submitted to the will of God the Father even unto death.  He was our example.  Now it is our turn to be totally submitted to Him and trust Him with our lives.
