John 3:1-15 There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with jesus. "Rabbi," he said, "we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you."
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God."
"What do you mean?" exclaimed Nicodemus. "How can an old man go back into his mother's womb and be born again?"
Jesus replied, "I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don't be surprised when I say, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit."
I like to skim the obituaries in the newspaper or online from time to time. Maybe that sounds gruesome but I like to read about peoples lives, and imagine from the last words written about them what they might have been like or what kind of life they lived.
After people pass away, it comforting for others to say "well, they are in a better place now". I think we have all heard that statement. But does "EVERYONE" go to that 'better place (heaven)'? The answer lies in John chapter 3.
Jesus is having a conversation with a religious leader, a Pharisee. Notice this religious leader came to speak with Jesus alone at night (after dark). Nicodemus knew that Jesus was performing miraculous signs and wonders.... after all he would have seen the miracles with his own eyes. He states that because of those signs and wonders, he knew that God was with Jesus. Jesus took advantage of the one on one time with this Pharisee to tell him a very important truth. The truth Jesus shared was: UNLESS YOU ARE BORN AGAIN, YOU WILL NOT GO TO HEAVEN.
This confused Nicodemus --- he didn't understand what Jesus meant. He was thinking of his physical birth. But Jesus was talking 'spiritually'.
I know it's comforting for people to say that a loved one is in a "better place". I understand.... I get the need to say something comforting. But the truth of the matter is ..... to enter heaven one must receive Jesus as Lord and Savior SPIRITUALLY and their new life begins...
It doesn't matter what kind of life one lives.... someone can be the very best person according to man, but still not know Jesus and therefore, spend eternity in hell.
How does this "rebirth" happen? It happens when one:
- recognizes they have fallen short and sinned (like all people have).
- repent of the wrong things done
- call on Jesus to be Savior and Lord
- turn away from sin and strive to walk in right standing with Christ
Living a "good life" just isn't enough. This Pharisee would have been a "good person" according to mans eyes.... after all he was a religious leader. But Nicodemus didn't 'know Christ'.... he had heard of him, but he didn't know him.
Do you know Christ? Is He Lord of your life? Have you asked for forgiveness and turned from sin? Do you know beyond any doubt that if your eyes close in death - you will be with Him for eternity in heaven. If you answered "NO" to any of these questions, I urge you to get right with God.
