Leaving A Legacy

READ:  Proverbs 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children.

Psalm 78:4  We will not hide them (God's laws) from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.

I recently read an obituary online that went viral for an 80-year-old lady by the name of Kathleen Dehmlow who was from a small town in Minnesota:

We can be pretty certain that this mother lived with her regrets and suffered the consequences of her failures, and it is very sad that her children stayed so full of bitterness and unforgiveness for greater than 50 years that they felt the need to say such hateful comments about her after her death.   We can only pray that this daughter and son can find Jesus and learn to forgive through His Love.

This story made me begin to wonder about the "legacy" that we leave behind.   Our lives on earth are really but a vapor - here today and gone tomorrow - but those we touch and love while here on earth .... their lives go on.

In 2 Timothy we see clear evidence of the legacy that one can leave.  We read in Paul's letter to Timothy that Paul mentions Timothy's faith and how much it matured under the spiritual guidance of his mother and grandmother.  Paul says, "I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice...." (2 Timothy 1:5).

Legacy is not leaving something for people. It’s leaving something in people. - Peter Strople

Children will grow up to mimic their parents.   Do they see you reading your Bible, praying, lifting hands in worship to Your King?   Do they watch you being honest, hardworking, trustworthy, and full of integrity?    There is great truth in the statement:  Children will learn by YOUR example.    They are watching, even when you don't want them to be, and they are absorbing your life examples like a sponge!!

Think about the legacy that you are leaving behind and ask Jesus to help you each day to leave a strong legacy FOR HIM to your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
