Who Do You Say I AM?

Bible Reading:  Matthew 16:13 - 17

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”

Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.

In today's scripture we witness a conversation between Jesus and his disciples.   Jesus asked them, "Who do people say I am?"      They replied with the obvious answer to his question.  "People say you are John The Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or another prophet."

You know I have had people say all kinds of things about who I am.  I have been prejudged, misjudged, and unfairly judged especially by people who truly don't know me.  I know a lot of you have too.  I know because I have received prayer requests from those who have been hurt, abandoned, bullied, mistreated and misjudged.

Jesus didn't hang long with the thoughts of what other people said about him.  He turned the conversation quickly to, "But who do you say I am?"        It was Peter who quickly answered, "you are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God!"

We too can't allow our minds and hearts to linger on who "other people" say we are.  We will  always be disappointed if we put our care and our value in what others think of us.   Instead we need to quickly turn the question in our mind to "But who does Jesus say I am?"

Jesus says:

I am a child of God (John 1:12)

I am a friend of Jesus (John 15:15)

I have been justified and redeemed (Romans 3:24)

I will not be condemned (Romans 8:1)

I have been set free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2)

I am a fellow heir with Christ (Romans 8:17)

I am joined to the Lord and am ONE spirit with Him (1 Corinthians 6:17)

I am a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)

I am no longer a slave but a child of the heir (Galatians 4:7)

I have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3)

and the list really goes on and on....   It doesn't matter who the world says you are.    Jesus said in John 15:18-19, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you".

What matters is who God says you are! That is your REAL IDENTITY!!
